2. ABSTRACTDetermining the position of CEA, HBME-1 and Thrombomodülin markers in thedifferential diagnosis of Malign mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinomaMalign mesothelioma is a primer tumor that mainly develops from serosal pleura andserosal membranes. It is a problem for pathologists to differ adenocarcinoma of lung andmalign mesothelioma from each other. Immunohisthochemical investigation is the bestmethod to solve this problem. But at the present time, it is suggested to differ this malignancyfrom each other that it is beneficial to use double or triple combinations because of theabsence of specific antigens for adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma, additionally, diversity inantibody sensitivity. The materials which had the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma and pleuralmesothelioma between 1994 and 2004 in Firat University, Medical Faculty, Department ofPathology, were taken into study. Sections, prepared form praffin blocks of 12adenocarcinoma and 18 mesothelioma, were carried out CEA, HBME-1, thrombomodulinantibodies. The density and\or severity, prevalence and localization of painting aredetermined. The positivity with CEA application was determined in 27.7 % of malignmesothelioma cases and 83.3 % of adenocarcinoma cases. While the positivity ofthrombomodulin in malign mesothelioma was 72.2 %, that of adenocarcinoma was 41.6 %.The positivity with HBME-1 application was determined 66.6% and 25% in mesotheliomaand adenocarcinoma, respectively. In malign mesothelioma cases, it was determined as positive with all of CEA, HBME-1 and thrombomodulin but the sensitivity of HMBE-1 and thrombomodulin was higher thansensitivity of CEA.In also adenocarcinoma cases, it was determined as positive with all of CEA, HBME-1and thrombomodulin markers but the sensitivity of CEA marker was higher than thesensitivity of HMBE-1 and thrombomodulin markers. In conclusion, it may be suggested that CEA, HMBE-1 and thrombomodulin is notspecific markers for malign mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma, but it can be used as triplecombination in differential diagnosis. Keywords: malign mesothelioma, adenocarcinoma, CEA, Thrombomodulin, HBME-1
