Construction of meaning in media: Bitcoin example

Depending on the development of Blockchain technology, the crypto currency. Bitcoin, which has become very popular in all areas of daily life, remains indistinct. Bitcoin, a rather vague agenda, is a system in which the orientation is not very predictable. However, the media is building a world of meaning to make this situation predictable. Therefore, it is curicial to put forward the terms of this world of meaning built by the media. In this study, it is aimed to reveal how Bitcoin reality is built by media and become a part of daily life and how it is transmitted through media. With the help of scientific data, the present study tries to examine; how media defines Bitcoin, which meanings are attributed to this novel currency and which factors are effective in creating these meanings. The main problematic here is not to examine what bitcoin is, but, by using methods of literature analysis and Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, to unveil the ways in which media constructs a world of meaning about bitcoin. Key Words: Media, Meaning, Reality, Bitcoin
