Abstract (EN)

Economic theories of growth have highlighted domestic factors for understanding a country's growth performance and have typically ignored the interaction among different economies. This thesis examines the role of spatial spillovers in economic growth for different groups of developing economies. The study argues that the economic growth is an important issue for developing countries and their growth rates are not independent from each other. In order to investigate the interdependencies of countries' growth rate, I use spatial econometric approach. At first, I test the existence and the type of spatial dependence. In addition to specification tests which belong to spatial models, choosing the best weighting matrix that represents data is explained. I explicitly model these spatial interactions that may arise on the basis of geographical, cultural or institutional similarities or bilateral trade and ask how much they are likely to matter for growth externalities and spillover effects. For a different kind of grouping of developing economies; firstly my spatial exploratory analysis for the growth rate of GDP per capita of Emerging Market Economies (EME) shows that there is no spatial pattern and it is not possible to identify any spillover effects among their economic growth even using different kind of proximity definitions. The results suggest that their growth rates are not interacted well, even though the growth process is very important for all defined countries. Then I turn the focus to some other region, while my results indicate that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries' growths have positive spatial interaction. They are positively affected by economic growth of countries that are geographically close and that have similar cultural and institutional characteristics. However, trade linkages among the different partners matter less for MENA countries' growth spillovers. I find that spillover effects of growth are mainly due to economic activities in countries that trade primarily oil. The importance of trade diversification within the region gain significance because it cannot be seen substantial spillover effects due to bilateral trade weights.
