Abstract (EN)

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide. Cancer of the breast is a heterogeneous disease related to different biological characteristics and clinical actions. The cells of the breast divide without control. Melatonin is a hormone that is synthesized and released by the pineal gland in the brain and responds to the sleep/wake cycle in the body. Melatonin acts as a free radical scavenger and antioxidant. Antioxidants are substances that protect cells against free radicals and cause delay or prevent oxidation. The aim of this study is the determination of serum total antioxidants and melatonin levels on patients with breast cancer and compare them to the healthy group. In this thesis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine serum total antioxidant levels and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the serum levels of melatonin in humans. According to our results, serum total antioxidants and melatonin levels in both the patient and control groups reached a maximum at 2:00 in the night and declined to a minimum at 9:00 in the morning but it was significantly high in the control group compared to the patient group.
