Determination of pests in stored wheats and corns in Mersin province, Turkey

Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out to determine harmful insect species in wheat and corn in commercial silo and ordinary warehouses in Mersin province during the period of May 2019-February 2020. 47 samples of stored wheat products were sampled; A total of 10 harmful species belonging to 3 orders and 8 families from the Insecta class were identified. Insect species Tribolium confusum Jaquelin du Val., Tribolium castaneum (Herb.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Sitophilus granarius (L.), Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouv.), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), Lasioderma serricorne (F.), Sitotroga cerealella (Oliver.), Liposcelis entomophila (Ender.). 28 samples were taken from the stored corn product; A total of 7 harmful species belonging to 2 orders and 6 families from the Insecta class were determined. Insect species Tribolium castaneum (Herb.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Sitophilus granarius (L.), Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouv.), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Liposcelis entomophila (Ender.), Carpophilus sp. has been determined. The highest rate of grains damaged as a result of insect feeding in wheat product in ordinary and silo warehouses was 2%, similar to corn product stored in ordinary warehouses.
