Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of the drinking water distribution network is to take the water from the source and to deliver to the desired point in the desired quantity, quality and pressure. The drinking water distribution network is one of the most important urban infrastructure facilities. The construction and operation of these facilities are complex in terms of hydraulics. Water authorities are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the drinking water distribution networks. Water authorities have to keep the system under control so that the drinking water distribution networks can be managed at the optimal level. If the parameters such as flowrate, pressure and water quality are not known at any time and part of the network or if a fault occurs in any part of the network and if it is not possible to detect the valves that will discharge the water as soon as possible with least households are affected , it is not possible to operate at optimal level. The main purpose of this thesis is to come up with decision mechanisms to manage the network in an optimal way by making the hydraulic model of the existing drinking water distribution network. Mathematical modeling of the physical state is very common when the system can not be experimentally reconstructed or is very costly. Within the scope of this thesis study, a sample region is chosen from Sultanbeyli district of Istanbul city and hydraulic model of drinking water network of this sample region is formed. The region comprise of 3177 buildings, 7036 subscriber contracts with a population of 24257. The lowest and highest elevation of the region is 177.65 m and 256.71 m, repectively. Main drinking water pipe length is 55993 m. Hydraulic model of drinking water distribution network has been designed and various scenarios have been studied involving lost leakage water reduction, vanishing work, pressure crusher optimization, load loss analysis, fire test, future projection works. Economic benefits have been evaluated in thecas of the results of the hydraulic model scenarios are integrated with operational activities. If the work done in the sample work area is applied to the whole of Istanbul city, it is estimated that a profit of 1.000.000 TL per year will be gained due to the vanishing work results of designed hydraulic model. It is also estimated that with the head loss analysis, if the open / closed operation of the valves is not done correctly it will result in an energy cost. It is further concluded that an economic profit of 129.060.832 TL will be gained if 1 bar pressure management is applied throughout the city of Istanbul.
