The effects of lycopene in mesenteric ischemia reperfusion injury

Abstract (EN)

Özgür İKİZ. Reserch of the effects of lycopene in mesenteric ischemia reperfusion injury; expertise thesis. Bolu. 2014 Early diagnosis and treatment of acute mesenteric ischemia is a difficult disease. Free radicals are responsible from postischemic reperfusion damage by oxygen. Lots of antioxidants were used in experimental researches to reduce free oxygen radical mediated tissue damage. In this study inhibitory and reductant affect of antioxidant lycopene was investigated on mesenteric ischemia reperfusion injury. Twenty eight female Wistar albino rats were used in this study. Rats were divided into 4 groups; sham, control group (the only group of mesenteric ischemia) and lycopene given before ischemia, lycopene given after ischemia. Reperfusion was provided for 30 minutes. Lycopene field groups were given 4 mg/kg lycopene, per oral. After the mesenteric ischemia, Blood, tissue and culture samples were taken from rats at 12 hours. LDH, CK, histological injury score, IgA and bacterial translocation levels of the lycopene given before mesenteric ischemia group were observed to be similar to, those of the sham group. It was observed that ischemic tissue damage in lycopene given before mesenteric ischemia group was less that of the control group (p=0,011). Also average values of CK and LDH which are used as supportive biochemical parameters to show tissue damage; were significantly lower in the lycopene given before ischemia group than the control group. It has been detected that mucosal IgA levels are less in control group compased to the than sham group (p=0.001). Mucosal IgA level was shown to be higher in lycopene given before mesenteric ischemia group than the control group (p=0,014). Increased bacterial growth was found in the control group rather than the sham group at not only mesenteric lymph node culture but also, at blood culture. Lycopene given before mesenteric ischemia group, had same characteristics with, the sham group about bacterial growth. However fewer bacterial growth have been found, at this group compared to control group. As a result, it has shown that giving lycopene before mesenteric ischemia decreases tissue damage, reduces loss of mucosal IgA, protects intestinal barrier and decreases bacterial translocation by limitting inflamation,and tissue damage has on it was thought that Lycopene probaby has on immunomodulatory and antibacterial.
