Investigation of psychological gesture notion in Michael Chekhov acting technique on psychoanaliysis

Since the publication of Sigmund Freud's "Interpretation of Dreams" in 1900, it seems that he started to gain a new form not only in the world of science but also in his artistic works. With the emergence of the concept of director, it is observed that new methods have developed especially in the art of acting and the way of approaching the concept of actor has changed. Stanislavsky, the First known developer of systematic acting technique whom referred as "my best student" by Michael Chekhov developed his own method; It manages to be the pioneer of a concept that has never been seen before. This approach, which he describes as "Psychological Gesture", awakens the actor's world of impulse with the help of archetypal movements; It aims to activate the subconscious and thus enrich the image world. In this study, the essence of the theater art and psychoanalytic theory has been accepted as the observation of human behavior and the "Psychological Gesture" approach in Michael Chekhov's acting technique has been considered as a method leading to characterization. The development process of Chekhov technique was investigated in the study; By making a theoretical definition of the concept of psychological gesture in the technique; It has been examined in terms of the similarity of the application of the concept with the psychoanalytic theory.
