Abstract (EN)
In gastric cancer, early diagnosis results in an increased chance of cure. Although appropriate surgical resection constitutes the initial step for treatment aimed at cure, patients with advanced, yet resectable, disease require additional treatment beyond surgery. Adjuvant chemoradiation, despite its side effects, has been shown to improve overall survival. In this study, data on 122 patients with the diagnosis of gastric cancer who underwent adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy following surgery has been reviewed. Respectively at 2 years and at 5 years, overall survival was 59 % and 34 %, disease-free survival was 58 % and 35 %, locoregional failure-free survival was 89 % and 79 % and systemic failure-free survival was 61 % and 36 %. A multi-disciplinary approach by teams with expertise in the treatment of the disease should result in an improvement in overall survival, although this should be accompanied with newer systemic chemotherapeutic agents.
