Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of life our patients diagnosed as migraine and efficacy of prophylactic treatments by using PedMIDAS score.Materials and methods: Between September 2010-March 2012, patients aged between 6-17 years who admitted to Pediatric Neurology Unit of Dokuz Eylül University Hospital with the complaints of recurrent headache and who accepted to participate in this study were enrolled. Patients were grouped according to IHS 2004 criteria. Patients who were diagnosed as migraine were started therapy and followed-up at least 6 months. PedMIDAS questionnaire were applied at 0, 3 and 6th months. Results: A total of 171 patients [106 female (62 %) and 65 male (38 %)] whose mean age was 12.01 ± 3.34 years were enrolled in the study. Among the patients admitted with headache, 149 (71.35 %) of them had primary headache. The most common (41.5 %) form of primary headache was ?migraine without aura?. The mean missed school days at the last 3 months were 1.24±1.73 days in patients with migrain without aura, 3.25 ± 6.29 days in patients with migrain with aura and 0.94 ± 2.13 days in patients with tension-type headache. The missed school days related to headache was significantly higher in patients with migraine with aura than patients with migraine without aura and tension-type headcahe (p=0.03 and p=0.02, respectively). The mean PedMIDAS score of the patients with migraine without aura and patients with migraine with aura on admission (0th month) was significantly higher when compared to tension-type headache. The changes between PedMIDAS scores of 0-3 month, 0-6 month ve 3-6 month of patients who were given prophylactic therapy were significantly higher than the patients who did not receive any therapy. The changes between PedMIDAS scores of 0-3 months were 21.11 ± 14.68 days in topiramate group, 9.00 ± 9.30 days in flunarizine group and 26.80 ± 11.89 days in propranolol group. The changes between PedMIDAS scores of 0-3 months were significantly higher in topiramat and propranolol groups than flunarizine group (p<0.05).Conclusion: In conclusion of our study, PedMIDAS scoring sytem was observed to be useful when evaluating the efficacy of pharmacological agents used in the prophylactic therapy of pediatric migraine. Topiramat and propronalol therapies were shown to lower the PedMIDAS scores better than flurinazine therapy and thus shown to be more efficient in increaesing the quality of life.
