Abstract (EN)
Water is a limited and strategic source of life that has no alternative and is a vital necessity for living things. However, due to reasons such as global warming, pollution and climate change, water resources have started to deplete irreversibly. For this reason, humanity has faced the fact that water is limited and sustainable water recovery has become an important issue. The search for resources for the recovery and efficient use of water in buildings has come to the agenda. This study focuses on water harvesting through buildings in order to contribute to the sustainable use of water. First of all, traditional water harvesting methods were investigated. In order to understand the potential of biomimetic approaches in architecture, the creatures in nature that are able to harvest water are analyzed. In line with biomimetic design principles, how to transfer water management strategies to building designs is examined. In particular, how water management strategies inspired by living things can be transferred to architectural shell designs is investigated through examples. Functional similarities between the water management strategies of living things and building shells are identified and how these functions can be integrated into building designs is emphasized. In this study, it has been seen that water potential can be increased by using hydropanels, an example of biomimetic design. Taking inspiration from nature to improve the water harvesting methods of buildings has been found to be an effective method, especially in revealing the potential of water harvesting from air. In this context, it was found important to carry out building design processes with a multidisciplinary approach, to investigate nature's solution proposals and to integrate the teachings from nature into building design in line with biomimetic design principles.
