Abstract (EN)

The aim of our study is to determine 8-OHdG and MDA levels in patients with missed abortion, and to assess their role in early diagnosis and provide any means of prevention. This study includes 35 patients with missed abortion (patient group), and 35 healthy pregnant women with no significant complaint under 14 weeks of gestation (control group). admitted to our clinic between February 2014 - October 2014. Serum 8-OHdG, MDA levels, crown-rump lenght (CRL), gestational sac, fetal heart beats, complete blood count parameters (hemoglobin, white blood cells, platelets), fasting blood glucose, hCG, progesterone and homocysteine levels were evaluated. Mann-Whitney-U test and Student-T test were used for statistical analysis. A p value below 0,05 was accepted as significant. 8-OHdG and MDA levels were significantly higher in the patient group comparted to the control group (p=0,001). The progesterone and hCG levels were significantly lower in the patient group (p=0,001; 0,001). Fasting blood glucose levels were significantly higher in the patient group (p=0,04). There was no significant difference between complete blood count parameters, homocystein levels, gestational age and CRL measures,. In the patient group there was a positive moderate significant correlation between gestational age and MDA levels (r=0,443; p=0,008) and a positive weak significant correlation between 8-OHdG and abortion rate (r=0,392; p=0,020). This is the first study evaluating levels of 8-OHdG and MDA in missed abortion. Significantly higher 8-OHdG and MDA levels in missed abortion cases gives an impression that they could take part in the pathogenesis of missed abortion. KEY WORDS: Missed Abortion; 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine; Malondialdehyde; Pregnancy.
