Abstract (EN)

The art of music and painting of the 19th century, after the French Revolution, pioneered an age for Modernism in the wind of Romanticism. Paris, being the dominant art capital, brought the world of entertainment into the street by means of cabarets, festivals and night clubs. Degas, Lautrec and then Picasso coloured the voices of the bohemian life in their paintings. Towards the end of the century, the dialogue and interaction among all the art forms tended towards multi- dimensional aesthetic views in this way.The Cubists, in the twentieth century, presented the primitive African aesthetic as a novel artistic viewpoint by rejecting Greek-European aesthetic. In parallel with the development in painting, Igor Stravinsky, the composer, who had an important place in the development of rhythm concept by combining the traditional music with polyphonic music, opened new horizons in many ways in music. His work of art, as identical as Picasso?s paintings, had characteristics such as idolatry, primitivity, asperity, disharmony, excessive percussion, and slow rhythm. Similar primitive approaches have also been seen in the plastic attitudes of the Expressionists, Fovists, Surrealists, and Futurists.Schoenberg wrote pieces in music; besides, he made expressionist paintings in this period when the artists tended to make music visualized. It was known that he produced hundreds of paintings and charcoal drawings and that he even designed his own opera posters himself. By means of Schoenberg?s works, Kandinsky and ?Group Der Blaue Reiter? created a parallel harmony to music with the influences in colour improvisations with abstract forms. Similarly, Piet Mondrean produced various works related to music in New York, the center of Jazz world. Furthermore, the impressions of Johanne Sebastian Bach were taken their places as being elements of subject, form, content and structure in a great deal of modern artists? works. Since the artists named their productions as fugue, sonata, symphony and the like, terminological approaches connected with music such as colour symhony, colour orchestration, harmonic composition have been used in art of painting likewise.Music, which has an interplay of many other artforms thoroughout the history, has been in a much more deeper realtionship and interaction with the art of painting through the modernism period, compared to any other artforms. Finally, it could be said that painting and music have met in the orbit of abstract art.
