Abstract (EN)
This study is based on the work of Muhammad Yusuf Banuri, one of the most important scholars of the Indian subcontinent in the twentieth century and especially prominent in the fields of hadith and tafsir, on the sciences of the Qur'an titled Yatimat al-bayan fi shayʾ min ulum al-Qur'an. Based on this work, it is aimed to determine Banuri's views on some Qur'anic sciences and the exegesis of some mufassirs. In the second part of our study, which includes Banuri's life and works in the first part, Banuri's view on some of the issues of ulum al-Qurʾan within the scope of the relevant work is discussed, and in doing so, the method of comparison with various works of ulum al-Qurʾan, especially al-Zurqani's (d.1367/1948) Manahil al-irfan and al-Suyuti's (d.911/1505) al-Itqan, to which he frequently refers, is preferred. In the third chapter, which deals with Banuri's evaluations of some classical and contemporary tafsir works and their authors, a general framework of the Qur'an and tafsir studies in the geography where Banuri lived was presented, and through his positive and negative evaluations of the related works, it was tried to determine with which principles he wrote his work of ulum al-Qur'an, which constitutes the main subject of our study. The original aspect of our study is that the related work has not been scrutinised before and the contribution of Banuri, who is called 'Shaykh al-tafsir' (master of tafsir), to the literature of ulum al-Qur'an and tafsir has not been questioned. In this respect, this study is expected to make a new contribution to the field.
