Comparison of the values in Mustafa Orakçı's "Levent" book series and the values contained in the texts in the 5th grade Turkish course book

The aim of this study is to compare the values in the ''Levent'' book series, one of the most read book series by secondary school students, with the values in the Turkish textbook. Within the scope of the study, 10 children's books by Mustafa Orakçı and the 5th grade Turkish textbook used in schools in the 2022-2023 academic year were examined using the document analysis method. The determined books and the texts in the textbook were examined according to the values of "justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, helpfulness (ten root values) included in the Turkish Language Curriculum. According to the results of the research, there are 126 values in the texts in the primary school 5th grade Turkish textbook. ''Helpfulness'' is the most used value in texts. The theme most valued is the theme of "Virtues". In the''Levent'' book series, a total of 235 values were found in 10 books. The most processed value in the books is ''responsibility''. The book which has got the most values is the children's book called "The Mystery of the Garbage Truck". When the texts in the textbook and the texts in children's books were compared, it has been detected that the most frequently processed value was ''helpfulness'' (19.04%) in the textbook and ''responsibility'' (17.87%) in children's books. The value with the closest processing percentage (15.87-15.31) was determined as ''love''. The least covered value is honesty (3.96%) in textbooks and patience (3.4%) in children's books. In conclusion, it was seen that the values were clearly included in the 5th Grade Turkish textbook and the ''Levent'' book series, but the frequency of use of values in the books and texts was not regular.
