Abstract (EN)
In the first phase of the thesis, adjuvant substance cerium oxide (CeO2) have been studied in order to develop stable electro-catalyzer for direct ethanol fuel cell. Because of that morphological structure of cerium oxide varies with preparation technique and that changes electro-catalytical mechanisms are known; in this study, cerium oxide nano has been obtained quickly by using hydrothermal synthesis method. Activities of cerium oxide catalyzer (CeO2(HT)), prepared using hydrothermal synthesis method, against CO and ethanol electro-oxidation in three-electrode cell, have been compared with cerium oxide prepared with direct calcination (CeO2(K)) of ammonium cerium nitrite. In the second phase of study, composite electro-catalyzers in which adjuvant substance cerium oxide prepared with different methods has been used, has been prepared with wet padding process adding %5 and %10 PtRu/C percentage by weight. In order to compare the effect of CeO2, catalyzers have been obtained with wet padding process and the same PtRu/C percentage by weight using activated carbon instead of CeO2.After surface analysis of (CeO2(HT)) by scanning electron microscopy, non-uniform nano-rods with approximately 1 ? m length and 200 nm radius were observed. On the other hand, cerium oxide prepared by calcination has a particle structure in 400 nm size approximately. According to results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, CeO2(HT) has substantially higher oxygen stoichiometry than CeO2(K).After electrochemical analysis, it was seen that %10PtRuC/(CeO2(HT)) has the highest CO and ethanol electro-oxidation activity.
