Linguistic losses in Turkish translation found in Naguib al-Kilani's Novel 'Jewish Neighbourhood - Blood for Zion's Unleavened Bread'

This thesis deals with the grammatical losses in the translation of Harat al-Yehud Demün li-Fatiri Sahyun by Najib Kilani, a modern Egyptian writer, into Turkish. The difficulties of accurately transferring grammatical structures in the translation process are especially evident between languages belonging to different language families such as Arabic and Turkish. The complex and rich linguistic structure of Arabic may prevent the full preservation of meaning when translated into Turkish, and this may cause grammatical losses in translation. This study firstly aims to determine what can be saved at the grammatical level in translation by analysing the losses experienced at the grammatical level while transferring the work from the source language Arabic to Turkish. The grammatical difficulties such as conjugation of verbs, noun phrases, adjective phrases, prepositions and conjunctions, which are frequently encountered in translations from Arabic into Turkish, will be analysed from the perspective of the target text, and various methods and procedures used by the translator in dealing with these difficulties will be evaluated and their effectiveness will be analysed. In addition, in this framework, practical approaches and suggestions that can be used by the translator for the correct transfer of grammatical structures in the translation process are presented. In conclusion, this thesis aims to analyse the grammatical losses in this translation from Arabic to Turkish in depth from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The study aims to make an important contribution to the science of translation and offers linguists and translators the opportunity to expand their knowledge in this field.
