Architectural proposal to sheltering internally displaced persons in borno state Nigeria

Shelter and security are among the most important elements for human survival. Globally, insurgencies are known to disrupt the provision these elements. This study is on Borno State insurgency and its impact on the provision of shelter and basic amenities in the state. Borno State is one of the states in the Northern part of Nigeria. The state has suffered from tremendous recurrent insurgency attacks. The incessant insurgency attacks in the state are perpetuated by two renowned sects namely; the Boko Haram and ISWAP sects. The continued insurgent activities of these two sects have left the state in a terrible living condition by affecting the provision of shelter, security and other important elements for human survival in the state. The continued insurgent activities have also led to the loss of many lives and properties, thus causing millions of people to become homeless. The quest for survival has pushed some of these homeless persons in Borno State to living as internally displaced persons in IDP camps or amongst host communities. The aims of this thesis is to propose a neighborhood layout design unit that will serve as a blueprint to help in providing shelter and main needs for internally displaced persons in living in IDP camps in Borno State. The study used a mixed methodology of qualitative and quantitative technique to effectively gather data for the study. Major findings reveal that the insurgency has negatively impacted the provision of shelter and basic amenities in the state. This has caused a huge shelter deficit in the state. Findings also reveal that the general living condition of IDPs in IDP camps in the state is poor with most IDPs lacking access to food daily other basic needs / WASH facilities for survival. Hence, as a solution to the impact of the insurgency has had on shelter and basic amenities, a proposal of a neighborhood layout unit is designed to shelter IDPs living in IDP camps in Borno State. The shelter prototype in the proposed layout will be a three bedroom bungalow. The layout will be incorporated with the basic amenities need for livelihood as identified from the research survey.
