ABSTRACTMSc THESISSTRATIGRAPHY OF THE OKÇULAR (KOVANCILAR / ELAZIĞ) AREASadi YÜKSEKSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Cengiz YET ŞYear : 2006 Pages : 47Jury: Prof.Dr. Cengiz YET ŞProf.Dr. Atike NAZ KYrd.Doç.Dr. Murat NCEÖZThe rock units of Late Cretaceous, Middle Eocene-Oligocene, Early-LateMiocene and Pliocene ages crop out in Kovancılar region. Late Cretaceous sequenceis composed of diorite, sedimentary rocks, spilite, serpentinite and albite-diabaseunits. The ophiolitic sequence is uncomformably overlain by the Kırkgeçit formationof Middle Eocene-Oligocene age over the magmatits of Elazig in certain angledpositions. In addition, this formation is represented by sandstone, the litologias ofsand-clay limestone and algal limestone. Kırkgeçit formation is overlain by EarlyMiocene; aged, algal, and coral limestone which of all form the Alibonca formation.Karabakır formation, which was represented by Late Miocene and Pliocene agedSolhan volcanic tufa, Karadağ basalt, and Çaybağı limestone, units comes in anangled position. This formation is uncomformably ovarlay the Alibonca formationof Early Miocene aged. The old Quaternary of allivion cowers the oldest rock units.Key Words: Stratigraphy, Kırkgeçit, Alibonca, Karabakır, Elazığ.
