Teachers' perceptions regarding performance evaluation of school principals

This study was conducted to investigate the teachers 'objectivity perceptions of school principals' performance evaluation. This study is a descriptive study. The population of the study consists of 8742 teachers working at 224 official primary, secondary and high schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the central district of Osmangazi, Bursa during 2016-2017 academic year. In this study, the sample size of the study was formed as 450 teachers with the technique of random stratified proportional sampling. A total of 458 teachers participated in the study. "Objective Perception Scale Related to the Performance Evaluation of School Principals", which consist of 37 items and 3 sub-dimensions developed by the researcher and whose validity and reliability were tested, was used in the study. SPSS 23.0 package program was employed in the analysis of the data. In order to analyse the data, descriptive statistics techniques such as mean, standard deviation, percentile values were used and independent samples t-test and One Way ANOVA were employed for independent samples. Mann Witney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were employed for non-parametric statistics. According to some of the results of the study, it was found that the teachers' objectivity perceptions about the performance evaluation of school principals were generally high and positive. In the performance evaluation process, principals have largely fulfilled the roles related to observation, control and communication. As the length of working with the school principal increased, the perceptions of the teachers being assessed objectively also increased. The teachers' perceptions of objective evaluation decreased as the duration of study with the school principal decreased. According to branch variable, the level of perception of classroom teachers concerning objective evaluation was found to be higher than teachers of other branches. When the objectivity perceptions of the teachers about the roles of school principals in the performance evaluation process were examined, it was determined that the perceptions of the teachers working at primary schools were higher than the teachers working at secondary schools and high schools. As the performance scores of school principals increased, teachers' perceptions of objectivity regarding the roles of school principals in the performance evaluation process increased.
