Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of the classroom activities structured based on the Reading Apprenticeship Approach on seventh grade students' achievement in comprehending and summarizing narrative text, their self-efficacy perceptions and attitudes towards summarizing. The participants of the research, which was conducted in a mixed embedded experimental design (nested design), included 59 seventh grade students in a public secondary school in the 2022-2023 academic year. Within the scope of the research, the students' conditions before the application were determined with the pretests applied, and then summarisation teaching was carried out with the prepared teaching/learning activities. The research process, which was completed with post-tests and semi-structured interviews after the implementation, lasted 10 weeks. The quantitative data of the study were collected with the Reading Comprehension Test, the Story Summary Assessment Tool, the Summarizing Self-efficacy Perception Scale and the Summarizing Attitude Scale. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and researcher's reflective diaries to provide a more detailed view of the topic. The quantitative data obtained were transferred to the statistics program and analyzed. In the analysis of qualitative data, content analysis method was adopted and Dedoose program was used. According to the results, summarization training practices and activities structured according to the Reading Apprenticeship Approach were effective on students' reading comprehension and summarization achievements. After the training, a significant difference was observed in students' self-efficacy perceptions and attitudes towards summarizing in favor of the experimental cluster. Based on the semi-structured interviews and reflective diaries conducted in the study, it was concluded that the students had difficulty in grasping the stages of summarization and their follow-up at the beginning of the summarization training, but with the educational situations and activities designed according to the stages of the Reading Apprenticeship Approach, the students successfully completed the learning process.
