Investigation of antioxidant and antithrombotic properties of fruit, leaf and seed extracts of Olea europaea family's "halhali" species specific to Hatay region

Abstract (EN)
Objective: Olive is one of the most important plants of our country and creates a serious economic value. But olives are consumed only as breakfast olives and olive oil in our country. However, olive leaves and kernels are the components of olive that should be evaluated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and antithrombotic activity of the extracts obtained from olive leaves, fruits and kernels and to reveal that all components of olives can evaluable components with medicinal effects. Material and Method: : In this study, olive fruits, leaves and kernels collected from the olive tree grown in the Hatay region during the harvest period were used. Non-polar components were removed by Soxhalet extraction to obtain extracts with polar bioactive components. Total phenolic and flavanoid composition, DPPH and hydrogen peroxide quenching activity, metal chelating and reductant potentials were determined by spectrophotometric methods using these extracts. In addition, antimicrobial activity was determined by agar dilution method and antithrombotic activity levels were determined by aggreggometry technique. Results: 1mg of olive extract is the highest phenolic content of 317.24 µg gaelic acid equivalent flavonoid content was determined the highest fruit extract with 4.43 ug 1mg of leaf extract has a redding potential equivalent to that of 257.6 µg BHT. Highest potential for metal chelating activity was observed in leaf extracts with an lC50 of 13.33 mg/mL. Also leaf extract showed the strongest hydrogen peroxide and DPPH radical extinguishing activity. With regard to antithrombotic and antimicribal activity, the strongest effect was observed in the leaf extract. Conclusion: Our study findings show that all three extracts of olive leaf, fruit and seed were found very effective at different levels in terms of the parameters we tested. Leaf extracts appear to be more effective in general and can be videly used in the field of complementary medicine. Olive seeds must be evaluted absolutely and should be created surplus value. This valuable plant of our country must be considered as a medical plant beyond its nutritional element.
