Abstract (EN)

Since its invention in the early 1960s, the use of optical fiber increasingly has continued. Due tothe its advantages such as large bandwidth, high transmission speed, immunity to electromagneticinterference, easy electrical isolation and small size, the use of optical fiber is considerablywidespread. The most common fields in which optical fibers are widely used aretelecommunications, medicine, military, automotive and industrial.Part 1 of this work gives information about optical fiber communications by considering themajor advantages provided by this technology. In Part 2, propagation characteristics of light in aslab waveguides are described by using electromagnetic theory. In Part 3, mode analysis ofcylindrical optical fibers with step index profile are made by applying technique of separation ofvariables. In Part 4, relationship between modes in cylindrical optical fibers with graded indexprofile and propagation constant is clarified by the use of WKJB method. Part 5 deals with theoptical fiber couplers which function many important tasks such as combining and splitting thelight waves. Also, in this part impact of some variables such as core radius of optical waveguidesand distance between coupled waveguides on propagation constant of these waveguides areexamined. Part 6 contains detailed information about optical fiber sensors which are keycomponents of many electronic systems. Moreover, in this part analysis of sensing of pressure andtemperature with optical fiber interferometric sensor is made and effect of different parameterssuch as wavelength and poisson ratio on phase change which is sensing mechanism of theinterferometric sensors is searchedKeywords: Optical fibers, optical fiber waveguides, waveguides analysis, maxwell equations, TEmodes, TM modes, radiation modes, method of WKBJ, caustic, fiber optic coupler, fiber opticsensor, optical fiber interferometric sensor.xviii
