ABSTRACTMSc THESISEFFECTS OF CALCIUM ON ACCUMULATION OF CADMIUM IN THELIVER, GILL AND MUSCLE TISSUES OF OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUSGülbin GÖKDEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGYINSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCESUNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVASupervisor: Prof. Dr. Ferit KARGINYear: 2006, Pages: 51Jury: Prof. Dr. Ferit KARGINPof. Dr. skender EMREProf. Dr. Seyhan TÜKELIn this study, effects of calcium on the accumulation of cadmium in various tissueand organs of Oreochromis niloticus were investigated. The fish were exposed to 0.1mg/L Cd2+, 0.1 mg/L Cd2+ + 0.5 mg/L Ca2+, 0.1 mg/L Cd2+ + 1.0 mg/L Ca2+, 0.5mg/L Cd2+, 0.5 mg/L Cd2+ + 2.5 mg/L Ca2+, 0.5 mg/L Cd2+ + 5.0 mg/L Ca2+ and 1.0mg/L Cd2+, 1.0 mg/L Cd2+ + 5.0 mg/L Ca2+ and 1.0 mg/L Cd2+ + 10.0 mg/L Ca2+mixtures for 7, 14 and 21 days, cadmium accumulation in gills, liver and musclewere measured by Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometric methods.Cadmium accumulation in tissues after exposure to cadmium for 7, 14 and 21days increased with increased concentration of cadmium in the medium. The highestaccumulation occured in the gill followed by the liver and muscle. In all the exposure concentrations, cadmium accumulation in the tissues offish exposed to cadmium calcium mixtures for 7, 14 and 21 days were lower whencompared to those exposed to cadmium only. In all the concentration tested calciumsignificantly reduced accumulation due to calcium occured in the gills and this wasfollowed by the liver and muscle.Key Words :Cadmium, Calcium, Fish, Accumulation, Oreochromis niloticusII
