Studies on the load-extension behaviour of knitted fabric

Abstract (EN)

The mechanical properties of textile materials determine to find the relationship between the physical and mechanical properties of product and also for estimating the performance for a particular use. Functional properties of materials are of great importance for both processing and end use. The determination of physical and mechanical properties of textile products has become an important issue with their use in many areas together with the development of technology nowadays, thus it is not limited to classical applications. Knitted structures have also been subject to special requirements in these technological advances. When we compare the knitted fabric with woven fabric, for technical applications; flexibility and formability of the knitted fabric gives a special feature to the knitted fabric structure. For many years in the literature load-extension properties of knitted fabrics were found to be the subject of research. Following the ongoing technological developments in the study of functional properties of textile materials and technical features to the forefront is still continuing. Each of material has its own load-extension behavior. Poisson's ratio of a material, that is the relation between the forces applied in the direction of elongation and contraction in the other directions, has been defined and it is an important parameter. Scope of this thesis is to prepare an experimental data base for enable to calculate the Poisson's ratio of the material. The fabrics are manufactured on 7 gauge flat knitting machine in the Knitting Workshop of DEU Textile Engineering Department. The load-extension behavior of the produced fabric samples are measured in "The Fabric Elongation Properties Measurement Apparatus". The results are given in tables and shown in graphics.
