Abstract (EN)

Writing is one of the basic language skills and the most vital way to express emotions and thoughts precisely and accurately. It is important to know how to evaluate the level of students? writing skills and to improve them. The aim of this research is to examine the level of writing skills of students? having 400 points and up from High School Entrance Examination (HSEE), to identify if this examination is sufficient enough to measure writing skills and to show whether the students? success at the test-type examination is linear their writing skills. The scope of this study covers 9th grade students, having 400 points and up from 2006 High School Entrance Examination (HSEE), and now placed to Anatolian High Schools in Ankara. Students are selected by random sampling method.Within the context of the study, data is collected in two ways. Firstly, students are given six topics one of which is optional and asked to write a composition on the topic they choose. Secondly, the answers of the same students for the Turkish test in HSEE 2006 are analyzed. The success of the students in the field of Turkish is evaluated generally and then questions grouped according to the subject field are assessed. At the end of this valuation, it is clear that students give approximately 21 correct answers out of 25 questions. The result shows that students are successful in the field of Turkish at HSEE with the ratio of 84%.Researcher analyzes the compositions written by 100 students with a scale. Sub-criteria except for the success of the compositions is evaluated separatelyIn writing, students aren?t as successful as they are in HSEE. 63% of the students failed. 83 is the highest and 30 is the lowest grade they have.It is obvious that HSEE can measure only the knowledge level of students but not writing skill. It is a big defect to skip measuring writing skills to evaluate the Turkish knowledge and skills.
