This thesis examines the concept of love magic and its importance in historical studies, mainly within the Kingdom of England and the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas during the Middle Ages as a whole, while placing a particular emphasis on the 11th to 13th centuries. The research also incorporates insights from the History of Emotions with the aim of highlighting the place of emotions in magical studies. Intending to understand the role of emotions for the practice of magic and how it has influenced society, the following chapters analyze the sources, Picatrix, Cligès, Tristan and Iseult, Corrector sive Medicus, as well as individual cases where love magic has been used or was assumed to be used, showcasing the importance of love-magic for society, interpersonal relations, and various other aspects of everyday life and politics of the Middle Ages. In light of this, the following thesis aims to contribute to the literature by demonstrating that the use of magic is closely tied to emotions as motivating factors. Therefore, without a thorough understanding of the relationship between emotions and magical studies, research on love magic would be incomplete. Surprisingly, the analysis of love magic in the Middle Ages not only shows what interpersonal relationships were like during that period but also offers insights into the gender roles and power dynamics of the era. One aspect that is particularly attention-grabbing is that, as examined in this thesis, love magic has been used not only for enhancing personal relationships but also for self-protection and political advantage.
