Challenges faced by listening to secondary school students (listening challenges survey)

Abstract Listening Difficulties Faced by Secondary School Students (Listening Challenges Survey) The most important step for basis of communication is language as for first acquisition of language is listening. Listening which starts from the mother's womb is the first human effort to make sense. If generations who can use the listening, which is the first step of understanding the world, effectively grow up; listening will affect positively improvement of other abilities such as the life is given to a sapling that is standing newly. The aim of this study was determine the listening difficulties faced by secondary school students and in these difficulties; understanding of whether or effective role of variables like school, class level, gender, parent's education level, monthly income of family, number of books per month, daily television viewing time, daily internet usage (social networks, news, etc.) and playing time, average of Turkish and Mathematic lessons. Relational screening method was used to determine the relationship with these variables. In the study, a total of 1064 students were studied in four classes at four secondary schools determined by random sampling from the central district of Kütahya in the second semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. In order to determine the listening difficulties, the 25 Listening Difficulties Questionnaire for Secondary School Students which consists of 25 items was developed. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient (0.69) was obtained. The collected data were expressed as percentage and frequency and analyzed using Chi-square. 16 of the 25 items included in the school variable, 15 according to the grade level variable, 3 according to the gender, 3 according to the education level of the parents, 2 according to the number of monthly book reading, 2 'according to the daily television viewing time, 3 according to the daily internet usage and playing time, 7 according to the average of Turkish lessons and 9 according to the average of mathematics course showed significant differences. The monthly income of family didn't form difference significantly.
