Abstract (EN)
Orientalism is a complex phenomenon with a long history in Western culture. It begins with the ancient Greeks' image of the Persian Empire and deepens with the rise of the Ottoman Empire and the threat it posed to Europeans. Edward Said's Orientalism analyzes how the West constructs and colonizes the Eastern other. This phenomenon involves an ontological and epistemological distinction between East and West, as well as an authoritarian construction of knowledge. The image and perception of the Ottoman Empire in the eyes of Europe was part of the discourse in Western Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. As Ottoman armies approached Christian lands, the Ottoman Islamic population became an object of fear and admiration. The rise of the print culture during this period paralleled the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. Antiquarian travelers who lived during this period conveyed the diversity of the Ottoman Empire by deepening the Western perception of the East. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the printing techniques developed in Europe and the artistic styles brought by Western artists traveling to the Ottoman Empire during this period enabled Orientalism to deepen and spread. During this period, descriptions of Ottoman culture and lifestyle attracted great interest in Europe and contributed to the popularization of Orientalism. The works of artists who traveled to the Ottoman Empire during this period became valuable sources about the Ottoman Empire and aroused great interest among Europeans. The engravings in travelogues and guidebooks of this period played an important role in spreading information about Ottoman urban culture and lifestyle in Western societies. These engravings have an important place in the production of the oriental image in the West.
