Refunctioning of madrasah buildings in the Ottoman period: Kepenekci Sinan Madrasah

The madrasas that are used as an educational structure in the historical process are the important educational units of the Ottoman Empire and they provided the education of individuals who will take part in the administration of the country. These educational buildings which composes significant examples of the cultural heritage have lost their original functions today and they have been destroying by being exposed to different using functions and losing their architectural originality. The cultural properties that have lost their functions at the present time are utilized specific to madrasa. Operating systems and architectural properties of madrasa strucures have been explained throughout the historical development process. In this study, seventy-two madrasas that are extant and located in Istanbul have been determined; afterall, their current situations and their usings have been evaluated. According to results of the evaluations, it is emphasised that the importance of refunctioning and the relations of those funtions with immediate surroundings of the madrasas on saving the characteristics. In this direction, Kepenekci Sinan Madrasa which is evaluated within scope of study located in Fatih, Istanbul have ben taken into consideration and its current situaiton is documented with building survey and photographs. In the offering restoration project that is prepared to provide refunctioning of madrasa structure by saving its and architectural characteristics; required place construct, operating system and technical needs are explained in accordance with the refunctioning.
