From Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic mauser rifles in Turkish Army

There has been an attempt to carry out military modernisation movements, that have been observed from the Ottoman Empire through to the Tulip Revolution, more decisively since the 19th century, accordingly many changes occurred within the Ottoman army. Together with the influence of the Ottoman ? German proximity and German officers who began serving in the Ottoman army, the Turkish army resorted to having its new technology weaponry needs met by German producers. The Krupp cannonballs obtained in the Sultan Abdülaziz era were followed by the importation of the ?Mauser Rifles? in the Sultan Adbülhamit II era. It is known that between 1887 and 1914 over one million Mauser rifles were produced by the Waffenfabrik Mauser, a company in the German town of Oberndorf a.N. Manufacturing weapons for many different countries across the world, the company is also known to have produced five different rifle models for the Ottoman army. After 1887, the Mauser rifles became an indispensible weapon for Turkish soldiers in all the battles fought by the Ottoman Empire. The manufacturing company gave the rifles it produced for the Turkish army the name; ?Türken Mauser? meaning the ?Turkish Mauser?.The movement in Anatolia that began upon the de facto end of the Ottoman Empire, after the Amistice of Mudros, caused a need for weaponry. This need was met by the Mauser rifles which were effectively used in the Turkish War of Independence. Mausers, other weapons and ammunition needed by Anatolian forces were obtained in a variety of ways such as stealing them from Istanbul and transporting them to Anatolia or with Russian and French support. By changing the calibres of the rifles, Mauser rifles continued to be used in the early years of the Turkish Republic. It is known that the number of rifles used by the Turkish Republic?s army through the alteration of the calibre of the rifle barrel was 150,000 rifles.After an endeavour to generate local industry with the merging of the Ankara and Kırıkkale weapons factories, the first local production of rifles began in 1939. Despite the local production of weaponry beginning during this period, the desired production level has never been reached.
