Ottoman- Singapore relations (1864 -1923)

The subject and focus of this research is to examine the relations between Singapore and the Ottoman Empire from the late 19th. century till the early 20th century. Several historical records such as newspapers, historical writings and archives from both Singapore as well as Turkey including other past studies were being used as the source of information as well as examining the relation between Singapore and the Ottoman Empire. Those resources mentioned above were also used to portray and prove the different areas of relation such as political, economical, social and religion between Singapore and Ottoman Empire. In the introduction chapter of the study, after the subject, scope and importance of the study are stated, a short history of Singapore and the general relation between Ottoman and Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia is been discussed. In the second chapter, both direct and indirect political relations of Singapore and the Ottoman Empire are explained in this chapter. In this chapter topics such as the appointment of an Ottoman General Consuls to Singapore and tragic events such World War One and Balkan Wars, the effect of Pan-Islamism ideology in Singapore are discussed. At the same time it also discussed on the changes in the political power balance in Europe which had affected the whole world such as British and Holland colonisation in Asia. The third chapter focuses on the religious, social and cultural relations between Singapore and Ottoman Empire. This chapter also includes topics on Singapore-Ottoman relations through Hajj rituals and also the journey of Ottoman marine crews from the Ertugrul Frigate who had stayed in Singapore for three months and their experiences in Singapore before continuing their final journey to Japan.
