The relationship between buildings form and energy consumption in hotels : The case of Antalya hotels

The energy consumption of hotel buildings is of great importance due to its environmental impact and operational costs. In regions with a Mediterranean climate, optimizing energy efficiency in buildings is particularly crucial for achieving sustainability goals. In this context, analyzing the relationship between hotel building form and energy consumption enables architects and designers to make data-driven and strategic design choices, ultimately fostering the development of energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings. Furthermore, such research provides essential Insights for mitigating climate change and enhancing resource efficiency. This master's thesis focuses on energy efficiency within the context of sustainability. The study examines hotel buildings commonly found in the Mediterranean region's climatic conditions and evaluates the relationship between their formal characteristics and energy consumption. By analyzing hotel buildings in terms of form and geometric properties, the study explores their potential impacts on energy use. Simulations were conducted on hotels with specific geometric forms, detailing the effects of these forms on energy efficiency. The findings demonstrate that focusing on specific forms and configurations during the architectural design process can help optimize energy consumption and provide valuable guidance for architects. In the study, computer-aided simulation techniques were used as the method within the framework of the evidence-based research approach. BIM Mass Modelling was utilized in energy simulations. The scope of the study was geographically limited to Antalya province. The relationship between the geometric form shaping the architecture of hotel buildings and energy consumption was tested on specific typologies, and it was observed that compact and simple geometries offer advantages in terms of energy efficiency.
