Abstract (EN)
Fortuna is derived from the verb ferre, which means "to bring, to take away" and has many different meanings such as "fortune", "luck", "destiny", "wealth", "situation and circumstances". In ancient times, people believed that their lives were controlled by certain divine beings. Amongst the divine beings, there was Fortuna. Therefore, she was one of the most respected and feared goddess among all gods and goddessess, especially in Roman religion. Publius Ovidius Naso was exiled in 8 AD. In his Tristia, a work characterized by unhappiness and sadness, the poet said that everything that happened to him was the work of the Goddess Fortuna and his own bad fortune. With this discourse, the poet both revealed the cruelty of the Goddess and tried to return to his homeland by showing his own faults as the work of Fortuna. In this study, in order to understand Ovid's thoughts on fortune and the Goddess Fortuna, first of all, studies on the origin of Fortuna as a Goddess and concept were made and the use of the concept of fortuna in Latin Literature was searched. The necessary lines from the letters in the work called Tristia were translated from Latin to Turkish and analyzed.
