Abstract (EN)

This study centers on James DeMonaco's The Purge film series (The Purge 1, The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and The First Purge) and aims to analyze how the concept of "freedom" is constructed from a sociological perspective and the extent to which this construction aligns with social reality. The films depict a dystopian future in which all crimes are permitted for one night each year. Within the series, the concept of freedom is represented in a complex and contradictory manner, intersecting with state power, social class, and violence. The representations of freedom in the films were examined through a semiotic analysis within the framework of cinema sociology. Analyses linked to the theories of power, ideology, and social control developed by Marx, Althusser, Gramsci, Dahrendorf, and Foucault reveal that freedom in the film series is portrayed ambiguously across the dimensions of state authority, social stratification, and violence. Moreover, the study addresses how the notion of freedom influences social behavior, shapes social norms and values, and reflects the perception of freedom within American society. The freedom discourse in the films assumes different meanings within the axes of state power, class, and violence, raising the sociological question of whether true freedom is possible. The study demonstrates that The Purge series provides a significant resource for understanding the societal implications of freedom and the perception of liberty in the United States. The cinematic representations of freedom go beyond fictional narrative, offering critical insights and reflections on social reality. The findings indicate that freedom is transformed into an "illusion of freedom" through media propaganda and sanctioned violence, thereby concealing social inequalities and class divisions while producing detrimental effects on individuals and society.
