An investigation on spatial organization in coworking spaces

In the Information Age, the qualifications sought in the working environment and the sharing economy, which is gaining importance today, are effective in the transformation of working places. In this context, alternative working methods and office space solutions are tried. Coworking space is one of these alternative office space solutions. Coworking spaces, which emerge under the influence of the sharing economy, are working spaces where freelancers, small-scale entrepreneurs or members of organizations share the work space and collaborate flexibly while communicating. The aim of this study is to determine the design criteria that should be considered in the space organization of coworking spaces. In the introduction of the thesis, the aim, content and method of the study are explained. In the second part, the historical development of office spaces, alternative office space solutions in the 21st century, the development of coworking spaces and the economic, spatial, social and ecological gains it provides in working life are investigated. In the third part, the material and method of the study are explained, the spatial sections in coworking spaces and the criteria to be considered in the design of these spaces were determined with the help of theoretical studies and successful office design. In the fourth part where the field study findings are presented, five coworking spaces in Istanbul were examined in terms of design criteria determined in the third part in the light of on-site observations. The findings were supported by function analysis on spatial photographs and plan diagrams. In the fifth part where the results of the study are presented, it is stated that Kolektif House Levent and Maslak, Workinton Levent 199 and Kozyatağı AND and Atölye offices, which are examined within the aim of the thesis, have the appropriate quality in terms of spatial organization, spatial equipment and evaluation of spatial usage. The evaluation presented in the study is thought to contribute to the development of research and coworking space design in this field.
