Abstract (EN)
To study if intraperitoneal administration of probiotics can reduce peritonitis-induced lung tissue injury in rats.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Rats were divided into four groups, and subjected to induction of peritonitis induced lung injury using cecal ligation and puncture model (CLP). All animals were treated during surgery either the probiotic composition (Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Pediococcus pentosaceus) or crystalline solution. Animals were sacrified after 24 hrs and lung tissue and blood samples studied with histological (degree of neutrophil infiltration), biochemical; myeloperoxidase (MPO), malendialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and immunohistochemical (eNOS, iNOS) methods.RESULTS:Histological signs of lung injuries (neutrophil infiltration and eNOS, iNOS) were observed in all groups except the probiotic treated groups. MPO activity was significantly lower in the two probiotic treated groups with no difference between the two probiotic treated groups. NO assays demonstrated the low levels both in the lung tissues and blood samples in the probiotic treated groups.CONCLUSION:Intraperitoneal administration of a probiotic composition reduced peritonitis induced acute lung injury in rats in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model
