Abstract (EN)

Next Generation Networks, characterized by variable and high data rates, quality ofservices, supply mobility either in a network or between networks of differenttechnologies and service providers. An important point of view for components usedin a global next generation networks is standardization to allow different companies towork either independent or together. A technology developed to define these commoncharacteristics, standardized by IEEE, is WIMAX offen called as 802.16. Thistechnology aims to apply high data rates, quality of services, long distance and lowcosts to a wireless access technology on a metropolitan area. The technology andarchitecture of WIMAX is the main purpose of this thesis. Specifically, its mobilitycapabilities are explained. The thesis investigates the handover and internetworkingcapabilities of WIMAX to implement selected MAC-layer functionality. Results helpto identify MAC-parameters affecting performance during handovers that the upperlayer (as MAC-layer) protocols and procedures executed during a handover areneeded to be improved. As a practice, by using NCTUns simulator programme, thesystem performance of a WIMAX network in PMP mode has been identified fordifferent type of scenarios and the results have been discussed. As a result, in aWIMAX network, the location of base stations and subscribers, the number of hoststransferring the data, the direction of data, the location of users in the covered areaand the user service types are effective on the sytem performance.Key words: WIMAX, NCTUns, system performance, mode, GSM, wirelesstelecomunication.
