Abstract (EN)
Preeclampsia is a disease of one of the most important cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity in developing and developed countries. Its etiopathogenesis hasn?t been understood clearly yet and no specific marker in its diagnosis has been found. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in pathogenesis and severity of preeclampsia.This study was performed with 54 preeclamptic pregnant women and 50 pregnant women having no medical problems who has admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of Gaziantep University Medical Faculty between april 2010 and october 2010.Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in preeclamptics were statistically higher than control group in patients with similar age and gestational weeks. There was no significant difference in antioxidant enzyme activities between the mild and severe preeclampsia groups.Our data demonstrate that preeclampsia is associated with increased paraoxonase and arylesterase activity. The increased activities of antioxidant enzymes may be a compensatory regulation in response to increased oxidative stress in preeclampsia. Prospective studies are needed to determine the significance of paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.Key words: Preeclampsia, Paraoxonase, Arylesterase
