Historical geography and cities in the hellenistic period of mediterranean area in the light of Pseudo-Skymnos'"periegesis"

This periegesis, which has been synthesised from the ancient sources and written to a bithynian king Nicomedes, reveals itsels with its didactic style and poetic meter called iambic trimeter. For its poet is unknown, in 1846 it is suggested by August Meineke, due to some philological studies, that this poem should better be named as Pseudo-Skymnos, which is decided on so. Although the work is dated around 135 BC, there are various opinions and variations on it. The poem contains a prologue in 138 verses, and as its poet mentioned, of two continents, Asia and Europe, geographical description in a laconic style. This work is, in a way to shed light on colonisation and movement of migration, a poem of depiction of earth that focuses not only on city foundations, and the positionings of both cities and geographical elements such as mountains, islands, seas, lakes, river etc., but also mythological and cultural elements. This study is based on Karl Müller's edition which is a trustworthy compilation with 980 verses, and aims to analise and comment together with the geographical (such as city, mountain, island, sea, lake, river etc.) and mythological elements.
