Abstract (EN)
Aim/Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the regenaration period of nerve repair by using cyanoacrylate with those of other commonly used microsuture techniques.Material and Methods: The left sciatic nerve was reached by separation of the femoral muscle through a longitudinal incision on the anterior aspect of the left hip and the thigh while the rat is in supine position. The sciatic nerve was cut sharply and transversely with a microscissors at the point 15 mm proximal to the trifurcation of sural, peroneal and tibial nerves. (Figure-2)Group 1: No application has done to these ratsGroup 2: The nerve was repaired by end-to-end suturation with a 10/0 atraumatic nylonsuture material.Group 3: The proximal and the distal ends of the cut nerve were sutured by using 10/0monoflament nylon suture material, then 0.2 ml of cyanoacrylate was appliedby using a 2 ml syringe.EMG and histological examination was performed at fifth week. Results: No statistically significant difference between the cyanoacrylate group and the classical suturing group could be shown with EMG and histopathological examination findings (P value is 0.606, 0.743 and 0.888; respectively) (Table 8 ).Conclusion: The main advantages of cyanoacrylate application are its low cost, its decreasing effect on surgical procedure duration and its easy learnability. We recommend cyanoacrylate use if our findings are supported by similar studies.Key Words: Rat, cyanoacrylate, peripheral nerve
