The relationship between attachment and somatization: The mediating role of perceived partner responsiveness in romantic relationships

Difficulty of the diagnosis and treatment processes of the somatization symptoms augment the burden on the individuals who are already suffering from the somatic complaints. Previous studies have investigated attachment behaviors to evaluate the psychological underpinnings of the somatization symptoms. In addition to the inevitable appearances of the attachment relationships throughout life, perceived partner responsiveness can enlighten the relationship dynamics and outcomes for the individuals who are involved in romantic relationships. The present study investigated the relationship between attachment insecurity (avoidance and anxiety) and somatization symptoms with the hypothesized mediator role of perceived partner responsiveness in this relationship. Individuals (N = 304) who are currently in a romantic relationship and older than 18 years old participated in an online survey by responding Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire-R (ECR-R), Perceived Partner Responsiveness Scale (PPRS), and somatization subscale of Symptom Checklist 90-R-L (SCL-90-R). According to correlation analysis, attachment dimensions (anxiety and avoidance) and somatization were positively correlated but perceived partner responsiveness was negatively correlated with attachment dimensions and somatization. Also, mediation analysis showed that perceived partner responsiveness mediated the relationship between attachment dimensions and somatization. Discussion of the findings and limitations with the recommendations for future studies were made by considering the literature.
