Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to explore the nuanced portrayal of women within the realm of contemporary Iraqi painting, which bears the indelible imprints of Western artistic influences. Focusing on the creations of eminent Iraqi artists, including Jawad Salim, Muayad Muhsin, Mahmoud Fahmi Abboud, Mahood Ahmed, and Afifa Laibi the study employs a methodology encompassing visual, iconographic, and semiotic analyses. Through the examination of academic literature, exhibition catalogues, digital platforms, and artists' social media accounts, the investigation unravels the intricate interplay between style, form, and content in the depiction of women. These artists traverse a diverse socio-cultural terrain, reflecting the broader shifts in gender roles and societal values. Rooted in qualitative research, this exploration serves as a conduit bridging traditional art historical methods with contemporary digital platforms, thereby weaving an insightful narrative that sheds light on the dynamic representation of women in modern Iraqi painting. In its depictions of women, modern Iraqi art resonates with both the historical and cultural heritage of Iraq and the influences drawn from the Western artistic canon, often synthesizing these diverse strands. The artworks reveal a delicate intermingling of artistic evolution and cultural identity, with a focus on women's autonomy being conveyed in both explicit and implicit ways. Occasionally, the exploration of the portrayal of women also delves into the nuanced realm of their erotic dimensions. Through the juxtaposition of Western inspirations within indigenous contexts, this inquiry aspires to offer not only a deeper comprehension of Iraqi art but also a broader perspective that can potentially reframe the global discourse surrounding art, gender, and culture
