Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to evaluate the oral administration of gilaburu extract as an alternative treatment method in crystalluria cats with alkaline urine in the dissolution of crystals and in the treatment of inflammatory conditions that may occur in the urinary system. In the presented study, gilaburu extract was compared with standard treatment. In studies on humans and experimental animals, gilaburu's urine acidifying, anti-inflammatory and strong antioxidant properties were reported. In addition, the limited number of clinical studies on animals was decisive in the use of gilaburu extract in the presented study. The study material consisted of a total of 19 cats, the study group (n=12) receiving standard diet and gilaburu extract (100mg/kg), and the control group (n=7) receiving prescription food (urinary) and vitamin C. Urine samples were collected from both groups every day for a five-day treatment period, and physical, chemical and microscopic examinations were performed. In addition, blood samples were taken at the beginning and at the end of the fifth day of treatment, and biochemical measurements were performed. Within the scope of the urine analysis findings, when the gilaburu extract control group was compared, it was determined that there was no statistical difference at the end of the fifth day, the urine pH started to decrease from the second day, the number of struvite crystals decreased and rapid clinical recovery occurred. In addition, according to the biochemical analyses, it was concluded that the gilaburu extract administered orally at a dose of 100 mg/kg for five days had no side effects and could be used safely as an alternative treatment method in cats with struvite crystalluria.
