Abstract (EN)
Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, a series of significant shifts occurred on the global political landscape. The fall of the Berlin Wall represented the demise of the Communist system across the globe. The dissolution of the Soviet Union marked the conclusion of the Cold War and the end of the bipolar international system, a clear victory for liberal democracy. In the wake of these transformative changes, the newly independent states emerging from the former communist regimes faced the urgent need to implement profound political reforms in order to be accepted by the Western democratic world. Bulgaria was one of the countries that initiated its democratisation process during that period. Bulgaria has undergone a lengthy and successful democratisation process. It is important to note that such a process is influenced by a range of factors. Following the conclusion of the Cold War, Bulgaria was spared the type of intense conflicts that afflicted other countries in the Balkans. As a country that underwent a "soft transition" to democracy, Bulgaria's transformation story differs from that of other countries in the region. This soft transition is hidden under the influence of internal and external factors. In accordance with the subject's title, the thesis examines the role of internal and external factors in the democratisation process of Bulgaria. Bulgaria has demonstrated a notable example among Eastern European countries by adopting a peaceful approach to democratic reform and subsequently aligning itself with Western democratic institutions. The success of this process is attributed to a complex interplay between internal and external factors. The thesis delves into the influence of these factors on the democratization process and Bulgaria's integration into the Western democratic community. Transition theory serves as the analytical lens, providing insights into Bulgaria's transition to democracy and its aftermath.
