Abstract (EN)

After the Cold War, the collapse of the USSR took place and 15 new states emerged. Russia, which defines itself as the continuation of the USSR, has tried to establish strong relations with Ukraine, one of the former Soviet Union republics, due to its historical and cultural ties. However, Ukraine's desire to pursue an independent foreign policy did not suit Russia's interests and relations between the countries deteriorated over time. Ukraine wanted to benefit from the economic power of the EU countries by making integration studies with the West. Ukraine is a very important country for Russia and the West due to its geopolitical location, underground riches and fertile lands. Being on the energy and trade corridor between Asia and Europe has enabled other countries to enter into the field of interest. After gaining its independence, Ukraine experienced crises with Russia. Due to the crises, Ukraine aimed to establish balanced relations with Russia by following a pro-Western policy. However, since 1993, Russia has increased its influence on Ukraine. Due to NATO's enlargement policy, new crises have arisen between Russia and the West over Ukraine. As a result of the crisis between the two powers, Ukraine began to divide. Due to political instability, Ukraine could not play an active role in domestic and foreign policy, and carried out foreign policy in accordance with the administration. As a result, relations between the two countries continued in a negative way. Other states were also affected by the crises between Russia and Ukraine. The West tried to squeeze Russia by increasing its influence on the region. However, due to the disagreement between the EU and NATO, Russia's influence on the region could not be broken.
