Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Postpartum depression and anxiety is an important public health problem that is common and affects mother and baby. In the study, it was aimed to determine the frequency of depression and anxiety symptoms and to evaluate the related factors in a sample representing puerperant women in Sakarya. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study is a cross-sectional study conducted on women between 2-6 weeks postpartum registered in the family medicine system of Sakarya Province between August 2020 and April 2021. A questionnaire including socio-demographic information, EPDS scale and PASS-TR scale was applied to 282 women in family medicine units selected by cluster sampling method. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation analyzes were used in the evaluation of the data. RESULTS: Those who participated in the study with a total EPDS scale score of 13 or more were considered to be postpartum depression symptoms, and the frequency was 13.8%, Those with a PASS-TR total score of 17 points or more were considered to be a symptom of postpartum anxiety, and the frequency was found to be 53.9%. Conditions associated with the appearance of postpartum depression symptoms; unemployment, low education level of the spouse, unemployed spouse, having a history of psychiatric disorder in himself/herself/family, smoking habit, problems experienced during pregnancy, giving birth in the form of emergency cesarean section, not exercising after birth and not being able to spare time for oneself, social media and internet care for their babies not to use it to learn about. Being exposed to verbal violence during pregnancy, feeling inadequate about baby care, feeling the guiding pressure of the family, and not getting social support from spouses and relatives were associated with both postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression. CONCLUSION: This study is important in terms of pioneering future studies as it is one of the first studies to investigate the prevalence of postpartum anxiety in our country with a scale prepared for use in this area. There is a need for individual-oriented measures such as psychosocial interventions including both prenatal and postnatal support and education for postpartum depression and anxiety-related factors revealed in the research, and interventions for the society such as increasing women's participation in working life. In future studies, socio-demographic, biological and cultural factors affecting postpartum depression and anxiety should be investigated more comprehensively in terms of prevention and early intervention.
