Evaluation of aggression tendency in the context of visual, auditory reaction time and mental rotation ability

Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTİON: Aggression has been defined as a behavior that causes harm or destruction of another organism. Reaction time is expressed the time elapsed between when we perceive an auditory, visual or another stimulus and when we respond. Mental rotation is defined as the detailed perception of any object in a three-dimensional environment. In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between physical aggression, verbal aggression, hostility and anger, which are the sub-parameters of aggression, and visual and auditory reaction time and mental rotation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Our study was carried out with the voluntary participation of 24 female and 21 male a total of 45 people aged between 25 and 35. All the participants were the members of Başkent University. Participants interested in any sports branch were not included in the study. Likewise, people who use any psychological medication and have a history of neurological medicine were not included in the study. Participants with left dominant hand also exluded from the study. Participants' reaction times and visuospatial skills were measured using a computer-based test. Visual and auditory reaction times were evaluated by using computer-based testing. The measurement of visual-spatial skills were evaluated by means of a computer-based mental rotation test. To determine an individual's level of aggression, Dr. Buss Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ), which is the most frequently used aggression scale in the international literature that was tested and approved by H. Andaç Demirtaş Madran for Turkey was used. Edinburgh handedness inventory was used to determine the dominant hands of the participants. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant relation between the correct numbers in mental rotation test, reaction times of all participants and physical aggression, anger, hostility and verbal aggression. When male and female individuals were compared with each other related with correct answers in mental rotation test the correct answeres of male were significangtly higher. Even though male subjects were faster in responding to a visual stimuli no differense were observed between the two genders related with auditory stimuli. CONCLUSION: Neither visual-spatial skills nor auditory and visual reaction time had shown a significan relation with agression.
