Metaphors of middle school, high school and university students taking art education related to arts education concept

This research is performed to reveal the metaphors that middle school, high school and university students possess on the concept of art education. The study group consists of totally 269 female and 266 male students, totally 535 students, who are enrolled in 2014-2015 acedemic year at Kahramanmaraş Osmangazi Secondary School, Kahramanmaras Fine Arts High School, Kahramanmaras Atatürk Anatolian High School and Faculty of Fine Arts of Kahramanmaras Sütçü İmam University. The research data which is obtained through semi-structured questionnaire consists of two parts. While demographic variables take part in the first part, the second part is formed of the question, "Art education is like…, because …". Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are utilized in the research. While the qualitative data is evaulated by the content analysis technique, the quantitative data is assessed with the "chi-square test". Considering the results obtained from the study, 255 different metaphor for the concept of art education has been formed. With respect to the common charateristics of the formed metaphors, the obtained data is gatheredunder 12 conceptual category for Osmangazi Secondary School,10 conceptual category for Fine Arts High School, 11 conceptual category for Atatürk Anatolian High School, and 8 different conceptual category for Kahramanmaras Sütçü İmam University. The research results indicate that while there is not a significant relationship between the gender and the perception of art education concept for the secondary school, high school, and university students, there is a significant relationship with gender for the Fine Art High School students. When the the perception of students regarding theart education concept is evaluated with respect to school level, the research indicate that there is a significant relation between these two variables.
