The relationship between industrialization and folklore: The case Of Iskenderun Iron&Steel Factory

Industrialization is a phenomenon that emerged with the development of technology based on economic and social reasons. The world has undergone a great change and transformation with the industrial revolution. Raw material resources became valuable and people started to migrate from villages to cities. With technological developments, the concept of time and distance has lost its importance and the world has entered into a global process. Cities have gained a different dimension with industrialization; they have grown and developed day by day. The process of industrialization has also changed the centuries-old working order. Families interested in farming tried to adapt to the night-shift work system, and the role of women in the family changed completely. The industrialization process in Turkey was increased during the Republican period. Opened in 1970, İSDEMİR is one of the most important iron and steel industrial facilities of the country. It enabled the formation of organized industrial zones in its vicinity and managed to create employment for thousands of people. With the establishment of İSDEMİR, thousands of workers migrated to the region. A synthesis culture has been emerged as people from different regions have come together. With migration, the population in cities was increased and the change brought about by urban life became inevitable. With industrialization, cultural interaction in society has been increased and cultural values have been become open to each other. One of the most important factors in the spread of cultures is industrialization. The changes in folk culture around İSDEMİR is one of the most important results of industrialization. Thousands of migrant workers and their families have brought about significant changes in the fabric of the city. With the establishment of lodging houses, cultural interaction accelerated and people got their share of the change brought about by living together. Thousands of people who migrated from the village to the city and adopted a new lifestyle sought a new self in this technologically equipped and socially advanced environment. While trying to adopt Hatay's cultural values, they also wanted to preserve their own culture. This situation has led to the formation of cultural diversity and cultural belonging.
